# Vegetarian and Vegan Food in Siena
Siena is not as vegetarian-friendly as Florence, but the basics of Tuscan cuisine give you more options than you'd think.
Key facts
- Always safe: pici cacio e pepe, pici all'aglione, pappa al pomodoro, ribollita (autumn-winter), pizza margherita.
- Vegan: harder, but pappa al pomodoro and ribollita are vegan if no parmigiano is added — ask.
- Dedicated vegetarian-friendly places: La Vecchia Latteria (gelato + light meals), several wine bars with cheese-focused menus.
- Vegan-specific: very limited in the historic center. Florence is much better.
- Tell the waiter 'sono vegetariano/vegano' clearly; cross-contamination of stock and lard is common in traditional kitchens.
What I tell visitors
If you are vegan and visiting for more than 2 days, plan to self-cater one meal with market produce. The Wednesday morning market at La Lizza is excellent.
