# Siena to Florence by Train: Times, Cost and Tips
The Siena–Florence train is not direct and not fast. Almost every visitor I meet on the bus is surprised by this — so here is what to actually expect.
Key facts
- Travel time: 1h30 to 2h on the regional train, with a change at Empoli on most departures.
- Ticket cost: around 10 euro one way, second class. No advance booking needed — the train never sells out.
- Departures: roughly every hour from 06:00 to 21:30 from Siena station (in the lower town, not the historic center).
- From Siena station to the historic center: 15 minutes on bus 9, 10, or the escalators inside the shopping mall opposite the station.
- The bus (Autolinee Toscane 131R Rapida) is faster: 1h15, leaves from Piazza Gramsci in the center, costs 9.10 euro.
What I tell visitors
If you only have one day and value time over a few euro, take the bus. If you have luggage or hate buses, take the train and accept the change at Empoli.

Final word
Whatever brings you to Siena — food, the Palio, the Tuscan countryside — slow down. The city repays attention. If you have a tip to add or a correction, write us at redazione@visitsienaguide.it.
