How to Book Restaurants in Siena: A Practical Guide (2026)
When to book, how to book, what to say. Siena's best restaurants fill up fast — here's how locals get a table.
# How to Book Restaurants in Siena
Siena's best restaurants — especially the central ones near Piazza del Campo — fill up days in advance. Here's how to actually get a table, written by people who book them every week.
When to book
| Restaurant type | Weekday dinner | Weekend dinner | High season (May, Sept, Palio) | |---|---|---|---| | Popular trattoria (Carroccio, Papei) | 2–3 days ahead | 4–5 days ahead | 1 week ahead | | Michelin-listed / upscale | 1 week ahead | 2+ weeks ahead | 3+ weeks ahead | | Casual osteria | Same day, walk-in | 1–2 days ahead | 3–5 days ahead | | Pizzeria (La Napoletana 2.0) | Same day | 2–3 days ahead | 1 week ahead |
Same-day bookings: Possible on Tuesday or Wednesday lunch. Nearly impossible on Friday or Saturday dinner without advance planning.
How to book
By phone (still the standard)
Most Sienese restaurants prefer phone reservations. The owner or manager answers directly — there's rarely a central booking system.
What to say (Italian): > "Buonasera, vorrei prenotare un tavolo per [number] persone per [day] alle [time]. È possibile?"
Translation: "Good evening, I'd like to book a table for [number] people for [day] at [time]. Is it possible?"
If they say no: Ask for another time — "Ha qualcosa alle 20:30?" (Do you have anything at 8:30?)
Tips: - Call between 10:00–12:00 or 15:00–17:00 — between service times, someone will answer. - Italian mobile numbers start with +39 3...; landlines with +39 0577... for Siena. - If no one answers, try WhatsApp — many restaurants now accept bookings there.
Online booking platforms
- TheFork (Italian platform): Works for ~30% of Siena restaurants. Often has discounts (20–30% off) for off-peak slots.
- Resy / OpenTable: Very limited in Siena. Don't rely on them.
- Direct website forms: Some upscale restaurants have online forms. Response time is 24–48 hours.
Walk-in strategy
If you didn't book:
- Lunch (12:30–13:30): Higher walk-in success rate than dinner.
- Tuesday–Wednesday: Easier than Friday–Saturday.
- Ask for the counter: Some osterias have a few counter seats for walk-ins.
- Be flexible with time: 19:00 or 21:30 are easier than 20:00.
- Have a backup list: We recommend 3 options ranked by preference.
What to know before you call
- Typical dinner times: 19:30 (early, tourist-friendly), 20:00–20:30 (standard), 21:00+ (Italian-style late dinner).
- Table duration: In Italy, a table is yours for the evening. No one will rush you, but don't expect to be seated if you're 30+ minutes late.
- Cancellation policy: Most restaurants don't require a card, but repeated no-shows are remembered. Call to cancel if your plans change.
- Special requests: Mention allergies or dietary needs when booking — "Ho un'allergia alle noci" (I have a nut allergy), "Sono celiaco/a" (I am celiac).
Booking during the Palio
The two Palio days (July 2, August 16) and the surrounding 3–4 days are extreme:
- Book 3–4 weeks ahead for any restaurant inside the walls.
- Many restaurants switch to fixed Palio menus (€50–80 per person, no à la carte).
- Some close entirely and set up viewing terraces — these require months of advance booking and high minimum spends.
- Our advice: Book dinner before you book your hotel.
Restaurant-specific tips
- [La Napoletana 2.0](/en/articolo/napoletana-2-0-pizza) (Viale Sardegna 37): Call +39 0577... — small room, fills fast. Walk-in possible for lunch, rarely for dinner.
- Osteria Il Carroccio (Via Casato di Sotto 32): Call 3–5 days ahead. Ask for the upstairs vaulted room.
- Antica Trattoria Papei (Piazza del Mercato): Terrace tables require 1 week+ booking in warm months.
- Le Logge (Via del Porrione): Book via their website or phone. Contemporary Tuscan, smaller room.

Final word
A phone call in broken Italian is better than no reservation at all. Sienese restaurants appreciate the effort. Write us at redazione@visitsienaguide.it if you need help with a specific booking.
