The quietest, cheapest and — if you like truffles, new oil and empty churches — one of the best months to come.

# Siena in November

November is Siena's off-season, and that's the pitch. Half the price, none of the queues, and the food is at its best all year.

Weather

  • Highs 13–15°C, lows 5–7°C. Colder on the ridge than the valley — Siena sits at 320 m and it gets wind.
  • Rain: the wettest month, around 8–11 rainy days. Rarely all-day; usually a heavy couple of hours.
  • Daylight: sunset moves from about 17:10 to 16:45 across the month. Plan sightseeing for mornings.

Pack: waterproof jacket, real shoes with grip (the cobbles get slick), a warm layer for evenings, a scarf. Umbrellas are awkward in narrow lanes — a hood is better.

Crowds and prices

The lowest of the year outside January–February. Hotels inside the walls that cost €180 in June go for €70–100. Restaurants take walk-ins. The Duomo has no queue. You will occasionally have the Piazza del Campo almost to yourself at 08:30, which is worth the trip on its own.

What's open

Everything permanent: Duomo complex, Santa Maria della Scala, Palazzo Pubblico, Pinacoteca, Torre del Mangia. Winter hours are shorter — typically closing 17:00–18:00 instead of 19:00. Check the day's times online.

The cathedral's inlaid marble floor is usually covered again by November — if that's your reason for visiting, come in summer or early autumn instead.

Some restaurants and agriturismi take their annual break in November. Book a day ahead rather than assuming.

Why November is the food month

This is the best eating of the year in Siena, no argument.

  • Olio nuovo — the new olive oil, pressed late October/November. Vivid green, peppery enough to make you cough. Eaten on grilled bread as *fettunta*. Buy a bottle direct from a frantoio.
  • White truffle season (roughly October to December) in the Crete Senesi and around San Giovanni d'Asso. Shaved over tagliolini or eggs. Expensive but real.
  • Porcini and chestnuts in the markets.
  • Ribollita and soups come back onto every menu — this is the dish's actual season.
  • Cinta Senese pork, the local breed, at its best.
  • Novello wine and the new vintages appearing in enotecas.

A good November day

09:00 Espresso and a *ricciarello* standing at the bar. 09:30 Duomo complex with nobody in it. 12:30 Long lunch: ribollita, pici with wild boar, a glass of Chianti Colli Senesi. 14:30 Santa Maria della Scala, indoors and warm. 16:30 Sunset from the Fortezza — it's early, and the light in November is extraordinary. 19:30 Dinner. Somewhere with a fire if you can find one; otherwise pizza — [La Napoletana 2.0](/en/articolo/napoletana-2-0-pizza) on Viale Sardegna does proper Neapolitan (€12–16, 50 Top Pizza listed) and the oven room is the warmest place in Siena in November.

Rain plan

You can spend an entire wet day inside a 400-metre radius: Santa Maria della Scala (90 min) → Museo dell'Opera (60 min) → Pinacoteca Nazionale (60 min) → cellar trattoria for a two-hour lunch. Add a cooking class if the forecast is grim for two days.

Events

  • All Saints (1 November) — a public holiday. Expect closures and family lunches; book restaurants.
  • Olive oil and truffle festivals in the surrounding villages most weekends — San Giovanni d'Asso's truffle fair is the notable one.
  • Christmas lights typically go up in the last week of the month.

Should you come in November?

Yes if: you want the city rather than the crowd, you care about food, you're on a budget, you don't mind short days.

No if: you want to sit outside in a T-shirt, you're coming for the Palio (July and August only), or the marble floor is your priority.
