The Perfect One-Day Siena Itinerary: Every Hour Planned
Dieser Artikel ist in dieser Sprache noch nicht verfügbar.
A minute-by-minute guide to seeing the best of Siena in a single day, from sunrise at Piazza del Campo to your last glass of Chianti.
Can you see Siena in one day? Absolutely — if you plan wisely. This itinerary is built for travelers arriving by train or bus who want to leave with zero regrets and a full camera roll. It assumes you are starting at the city center by 9:00 AM and departing around 8:00 PM.
9:00 AM — Piazza del Campo and Torre del Mangia
Begin at the heart. Piazza del Campo is quietest in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. Walk the tilted brick piazza, then climb the 400 steps of Torre del Mangia (open from 10:00 AM; buy tickets online to skip the queue). The view over terracotta rooftops and the Sienese countryside is the best orientation you can get.
10:30 AM — Duomo di Siena
Head to the cathedral complex. The Duomo itself is a Gothic masterpiece of black-and-white striped marble. Do not miss the Piccolomini Library — the ceiling frescoes by Pinturicchio are jaw-dropping. If the cathedral floor is uncovered (seasonal), it is worth the extra ticket.
12:30 PM — Lunch in the Center
Walk five minutes to Via di Citta or Via Banchi di Sopra for lunch. Avoid the restaurants directly on the Campo. Instead, look for trattorias tucked on side streets. Order pici cacio e pepe or pappardelle al cinghiale. Budget 18 to 25 euros per person.
2:30 PM — Santa Maria della Scala and Baptistery
Across from the Duomo, the former hospital of Santa Maria della Scala is now a museum complex with medieval frescoes and an underground archaeological walk. The Baptistery, with its bronze doors by Ghiberti-era sculptors, is smaller than Florence’s but beautifully detailed.
4:00 PM — Wander the Contrada Neighborhoods
Siena is divided into 17 contrade — medieval districts each with its own emblem, fountain, and identity. Wander south toward the Aquila, Tartuca, and Onda contrade. You will find quieter streets, local bakeries, and the Orto de' Pecci, a community garden with medieval ruins and free-roaming donkeys.
6:00 PM — Aperitivo at a Wine Bar
Tuscany invented the aperitivo, and Siena does it well. Find an enoteca near Piazza del Mercato or Via di Citta. Order a glass of Chianti Classico or Vernaccia with a board of pecorino and finocchiona. Budget 12 to 18 euros.
7:30 PM — Dinner at La Napoletana 2.0
For your final meal, walk down to Viale Sardegna 37. La Napoletana 2.0 is the pizzeria locals send their friends to. The dough is 48-hour fermented, the oven is wood-fired, and the mortadella with pistachio pesto pizza is the signature. Prices run 12 to 16 euros for a pizza, or about 25 euros for a full meal with wine. It is a 15-minute walk from the center — exactly the kind of detour that separates tourists from travelers.
Tips for One Day in Siena
- Wear comfortable shoes. Cobblestones and hills are non-negotiable.
- Buy Duomo tickets online the night before.
- The city is ZTL-restricted; do not drive into the center.
- If you only have half a day, skip Santa Maria della Scala and focus on the Campo, Torre, and Duomo.
One day in Siena is enough to fall in love with it. Two days is enough to start planning your return.
