• Best transport: the 131R Rapida bus from Florence (1h15, 9 euro), not the train.
• Leave Florence by 09:00 to be in Siena by 10:30.
• Realistic day plan: Duomo + crypt + baptistery (2h), lunch (1h), Piazza del Campo + Torre del Mangia (1.5h), gelato + wander (1h), Pinacoteca or San Domenico (1h).
• Last bus back to Florence: around 20:30. Last train: 21:30 (with the Empoli change).
• What you skip: the contrada museums, evening passeggiata, dinner at any of the proper restaurants.
