# Siena Wine Guide: Chianti, Brunello, and What to Drink
Siena sits at the intersection of three world-class wine regions. Knowing the basics will save you from ordering badly at restaurants.
Key facts
- Chianti Classico: the closest region, made within sight of the city. Bright, food-friendly, 15-30 euro a bottle in shops.
- Brunello di Montalcino: powerful, age-worthy, 40-100 euro+ a bottle. Worth a tasting trip to Montalcino.
- Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: between the two, often the best value.
- House wine in trattorias is usually local sangiovese, fine for 5-7 euro a quarter liter.
- Wine bars worth visiting in Siena: Enoteca Italiana (in the Fortezza), Caffe Fiorella, plus small enoteche on via di Citta.
What I tell visitors
If you only try one, make it a young Chianti Classico — it pairs perfectly with everything you will eat in Siena.
