# Siena Restaurants With a View

A view in Siena costs money. Sometimes that's a fair trade, sometimes you're paying €28 for an average plate of pasta because there's a tower in the background. Here's how to tell the difference.

The rule

Views and kitchens rarely peak in the same place. A restaurant with a spectacular terrace doesn't need repeat customers, so it usually doesn't chase them.

Our approach: drink with the view, eat with the cooks. Aperitivo or dessert on the terrace, dinner somewhere without windows.

Views over Piazza del Campo

The cafés and restaurants ringing the shell all have outdoor tables on the slope. The view is genuinely one of the best urban settings in Europe.

What you pay: €6–9 for a spritz, €14–18 for a glass of decent wine and something to nibble, €35–55 a head for a full meal. Coperto €3.

Honest take: do this for an aperitivo at 18:30 or a coffee at 09:00, not for dinner. One evening drink on the Campo, watching the light go off the Torre del Mangia, is one of the best €8 you'll spend in Italy. A full dinner there is the least good meal of your trip.

Rooftop and terrace with the Duomo

Several hotels inside the walls run rooftop bars in season, with the striped cathedral and the Torre del Mangia in frame. Grand Hotel Continental and a handful of boutique properties on Via di Città and around Piazza Postierla open theirs to non-guests from roughly May to October.

What you pay: cocktails €12–16, light plates €12–20.

Honest take: the best-value view experience in the city. Go at 19:00, order one cocktail, take your photos, then go and eat.

Panoramic terraces at the edge of the walls

The southern and western edges — Via delle Sperandie, around Porta San Marco, the Fortezza bastion — look out over the countryside rather than the rooftops. Restaurants and wine bars there give you olive groves and hills at sunset instead of monuments.

What you pay: €30–45 for dinner, and it's more competitive because they're off the main flow.

Honest take: this is where the food-to-view ratio is best inside Siena. Ask for an outdoor table when you book, and book — there are usually only six of them.

Countryside tables, 10–20 minutes out

If you have a car or will take a taxi, the best view dinners near Siena are outside it: agriturismi and country restaurants in the hills toward Vagliagli, Pievasciata and the Chianti edge. Long tables, cypress silhouettes, food that's cooked by the family that owns the vineyard.

What you pay: €35–55 with wine. Taxi €20–30 each way.

Honest take: the best special-occasion option around Siena. Book, and confirm they serve at the time you want — many start at 19:30 sharp.

The alternative: no restaurant, best view in town

The Fortezza Medicea ramparts at sunset, with a glass from the wine bar in the bastion. Free entry, flat, no booking, and the view over the rooftops to the cathedral beats every paid terrace in the city.

Do that at 19:00, then walk 10 minutes to dinner.
