December in Siena is a trade: short cold days for floodlit empty lanes, a city that belongs to its residents again, and museums you walk straight into.

Weather

• Highs 9–11°C, lows 2–4°C. Frost some mornings, snow rare but not unheard of.
• Rain: 7–9 days on average.
• Daylight: sunset around 16:40. Dark by 17:15 — which, with the Christmas lights up, is genuinely the best part of the day.

Pack: warm coat, hat, waterproof shoes with grip. Interiors of old buildings are colder than you expect.

Christmas in Siena

Siena doesn't do a huge Alpine-style market. What it does have:

• Lights along Via Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Banchi di Sotto from late November — draped over narrow medieval streets, and much more atmospheric than a big-city display.
• A Christmas market, usually in and around Piazza del Campo / Piazza del Mercato in December: artisan stalls, food, panforte, ceramics. Modest in size, pleasant, an hour's browse.
• Nativity scenes (presepi) in churches across the contrade — a real local tradition worth seeking out.
• Ice rink in some years near the Fortezza or Piazza Gramsci — check locally.

For a full-scale Christmas market, Montepulciano's is the regional heavyweight and is an easy day trip.

What's open — and the dates to plan around

Museums keep winter hours (typically 10:00–17:00) and are quiet.

Closures to know: - 25 December: almost everything shut. Hotel restaurants and a handful of places open for a booked Christmas lunch only. Book weeks ahead. - 26 December (Santo Stefano): partial — many museums open, many restaurants closed. - 1 January: slow start; most things open in the afternoon. - 8 December (Immacolata): public holiday, busy day-trip weekend, everything open but crowded.

Between those dates the city is completely functional and pleasantly empty.

New Year's Eve

Piazza del Campo hosts an informal gathering with music and fireworks at midnight — no ticket, no barriers, just the shell full of people. Restaurants sell fixed *cenone* menus (€60–120) and sell out early. If you want the square rather than a set menu, eat early and go out at 22:30.

Winter food

This is soup and pork season, and Siena does both properly.

• Pici with wild boar ragù — the winter pasta.
• Cinta Senese pork, roasted or as salumi.

• Vin santo with cantucci to end everything.
• Truffle still in season into early December.

Should you come in December?

Yes if: you want atmosphere over weather, cheap hotels, empty museums, and Christmas without a theme park.

No if: you need long days, outdoor dining, or you're travelling on 24–26 December without booking well ahead.
