# 2 Days in Siena: The Itinerary We Give Friends

Two days is the sweet spot for Siena. One day is a checklist; three starts to need day trips. Here's how we actually route people, meal by meal.

Everything below is on foot. Total walking: about 6 km a day, with hills.

Before you arrive: three decisions

1. Buy the OPA SI Pass online (~€16, timed entry). It covers the Duomo, Piccolomini Library, baptistery, crypt, museum and the Facciatone viewpoint. In July–August the walk-up queue is the difference between a good day and a wasted morning. 2. Don't drive into the centre. It's a camera-enforced ZTL. Park at Il Campo, Santa Caterina (escalators) or Fortezza, roughly €2/hour. 3. Book dinner for both nights. Good places in Siena are small. Sunday and Monday closures catch people out.

Day 1 — The core

08:30 · Breakfast standing up An Italian breakfast is a cappuccino and a pastry at the bar, taken standing, in six minutes. Do it that way once. Sitting down costs more and takes longer.

09:15 · Piazza del Campo, empty Get to the Campo before the tour groups. The shell is at its best with long light and thirty people in it instead of three thousand. Walk the perimeter, look at the Fonte Gaia, then sit on the bricks for ten minutes.

10:00 · Palazzo Pubblico & Museo Civico (€10, 60 min) Inside are the *Allegory of Good and Bad Government* frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti — a 14th-century political argument painted on a wall, and one of the most important secular artworks in Europe. Worth reading two paragraphs about before you go in.

11:15 · Torre del Mangia (€10, 45 min including queue) 400 steps, no lift, hard stop on numbers. If the queue is over 30 minutes, skip it — you'll get a better view tomorrow from the Facciatone.

13:00 · Lunch Get one street away from the Campo and prices drop 30%. Look for a place with a short daily menu. Order *[pici](/articolo/cosa-mangiare-siena-piatti-tipici-toscani)* — the local hand-rolled pasta — either *cacio e pepe*, *all'aglione* (garlic and tomato) or with wild boar ragù. €10–13.

14:30 · Santa Maria della Scala (€10, 90 min) The old hospital opposite the Duomo, now an enormous layered museum: frescoed pilgrim wards, Etruscan finds, tunnels. Air-conditioned, quiet, and the best rainy-afternoon insurance in the city.

16:30 · Get lost in the contrade Head downhill toward Fontebranda and the Oca district, then loop back via San Domenico. Flags, fountains, ceramic plaques, laundry, kids playing football against a 700-year-old wall. This is the part people remember.

18:30 · Aperitivo An Aperol or a glass of Chianti Colli Senesi with crostini, €6–10. Wine bars on Via di Città and around Piazza Provenzano are honest.

20:00 · Dinner: Tuscan Night one is for classic Sienese cooking: crostini neri, pici, wild boar, *bistecca* if you're two and hungry. €30–45 a head with wine. Book ahead.

Day 2 — The cathedral, the view, the food

09:00 · Duomo complex (2–3 hours with the pass) Go in this order: **Cathedral** (the marble floor, the Nicola Pisano pulpit) → **Piccolomini Library** (ten minutes, unmissable Pinturicchio frescoes) → **Baptistery** and **crypt** → **Museo dell'Opera** → **Facciatone panorama**.

The Facciatone is the top of the unfinished 14th-century nave. Narrow spiral stairs, small platform, and the single best view in Siena — because the Torre del Mangia is in the frame instead of under your feet.

12:30 · Market-style lunch Something lighter: a *panino* with finocchiona or porchetta, pecorino from Pienza, a glass of wine. €8–12.

14:30 · Choose your afternoon

  • Art: Pinacoteca Nazionale, the Sienese school of painting, gold grounds and calm rooms. Rarely crowded.
  • Green: Orto de' Pecci — a working garden valley inside the walls, five minutes below the Campo. Free, and almost nobody finds it.
  • Skill: a half-day cooking class or food tour, booked for the afternoon slot.

17:30 · Fortezza Medicea at golden hour Flat ramparts on the western edge, a wine bar in the bastion, and the whole city skyline lit sideways. This is where Siena walks in the evening. Free.

20:00 · Dinner: pizza night After a day of ragù and pecorino, night two is pizza. Siena's best Neapolitan is **[La Napoletana 2.0](/articolo/napoletana-2-0-pizza)** on Viale Sardegna — real 24-hour-plus dough, Campanian ingredients, listed by 50 Top Pizza, €12–16 a pizza and a full meal around €25. It's a 15-minute walk from the walls, and that distance is exactly why it hasn't been ruined.

22:00 · Last walk Via di Città and Banchi di Sopra after dark, empty and floodlit, then down to the Campo one final time. It is a completely different square at night.

The two mistakes that ruin 48 hours in Siena

1. Eating in the first restaurant you see on the Campo. You are paying for the postcard. Walk 200 metres in any direction.

2. Trying to add Florence or San Gimignano into the same 48 hours. You'll spend three hours in transit and see neither city properly. Two days in Siena is two days in Siena.

Rain plan

Santa Maria della Scala (90 min) → Museo dell'Opera (60 min) → Pinacoteca (60 min) → long lunch. You can fill an entire wet day indoors within 400 metres.

Frequently asked

Is 2 days enough for Siena? Yes — comfortably, for the city itself. Add a third day only if you want a Chianti or Val d'Orcia trip.

Do I need a car? No. It's a hindrance inside the walls. Rent one only for day trips.

Where should I stay for 2 days? Inside the walls, within 10 minutes of the Campo. Nights are the best part and you don't want a bus ride home.
