Just off Piazza del Campo, one of central Siena's most beloved osterias. What to order, what to skip, real prices.

# Il Carroccio Siena: Honest Local Review

Via Casato di Sotto 32, two minutes from Piazza del Campo. Osteria Il Carroccio is one of the few central Siena restaurants that has kept locals coming back for years — not just tourists who stumbled in after the Campo. Here's the honest take after multiple dinners.

The short version

  • Go for: real Sienese cooking (pici al ragù di cinta senese, fiorentina, truffle tagliata) in a true osteria atmosphere with brick-vaulted ceilings.
  • Skip if: you want a quick lunch, modern plating, or vegan-focused menus. Carroccio is old-school Tuscan.
  • Price: €35–50 per person with wine. Pici €11–14, fiorentina €5.5/100g, tagliata al tartufo €24–28.

What to order

Pici al ragù di cinta senese **The signature.** Hand-rolled pici (Siena's traditional pasta) with slow-cooked ragù of *cinta senese* — the local black pork breed. €13. If you order one pasta, this is it.

Pici cacio e pepe The other classic. Simple, perfectly executed.

Bistecca alla fiorentina Sold by weight (~€5.5/100g, minimum cut ~800g). Grilled rare, sliced at the table. Best shared between two.

Tagliata al tartufo For truffle season (October–February): grilled sliced beef topped with fresh shaved truffle. €24–28. The most-ordered dish after pici.

Antipasto di verdure / fiori di zucca Seasonal vegetable starter. Light way to begin before the meat-heavy mains.

What to skip

  • Fish dishes — this is meat country. Stick to pasta and beef.
  • Desserts — fine but not memorable. Walk to a real gelateria instead.

Practical info

  • Address: Via Casato di Sotto 32, Siena (53100)
  • Phone: +39 0577 41165
  • Hours: typically 12:30–14:30, 19:30–22:30 (closed Wednesday — verify before going)
  • Reservation: essential for dinner, especially Thu–Sun. Book 3–5 days ahead in high season (May, September).
  • English menu: yes
  • Cards accepted: yes
  • Sala piccola: the dining room is small with tables close together — part of the charm, but not the right pick for a quiet date

Locals' tip

Ask for a table upstairs in the brick-vaulted room when you book — the atmosphere is significantly better than the ground-floor seating. And if cinta senese is on the menu (almost always), don't order anything else as a first course.

How does it compare?

  • vs [Antica Trattoria Papei](/en/articolo/antica-trattoria-papei-siena-review): Papei has the outdoor terrace under the Torre del Mangia; Carroccio has more atmospheric indoor seating. Both serve similar Tuscan classics at similar prices. We slightly prefer Carroccio's *pici al ragù*.
  • vs upscale options in central Siena: Carroccio is significantly better value at €35–50 vs €60–80 for the fine-dining spots, with food that's just as good for a Tuscan classics night.

Final word

If a restaurant two blocks from Piazza del Campo is still full of locals on a Tuesday night, that's the only review that matters. Carroccio passes. Write us at redazione@visitsienaguide.it for specific dish recommendations.
